In search of a veggie-powered zine mobile!

After an incredible first year of zine mobiling, the trusty Astro van’s tires are bulging from the weight of so many zines, the $100 gas fill-ups constant reminders of the promise to be gas-powered just temporarily…

And so!!!  The time for a bigger, earth-friendlier zine mobile has come!  A zine mobile with more space for both materials and people…

Do you know of a STEP VAN, BREAD/DELIVERY/PARCEL TRUCK, SHUTTLE BUS, SHORT TOUR BUS, AMBULANCE/PARAMEDIC VEHICLE, etc. yearning for a new home and purpose in life?  What it looks like is less important than these necessities:

* DIESEL OR ALREADY RUNNING ON WASTE-VEGGIE OIL

* SOLID AND IN GOOD MECHANICAL CONDITION

* AT LEAST 18-FEET CARGO SPACE

* WHEELCHAIR LIFT OR AN EXIT THAT COULD BE BUILT INTO ONE

* UNDER $5,000

zine mobile summer adventures

A call for collaborators and a route to come!  In the meantime… the zine mobile will most likely be in these places late June to early August — excited in particular to find roads and places less-traveled — welcoming: smaller cities and towns, intentional communities and land projects, farms, animal sanctuaries, summer camps…

at Actual Cafe, San Pablo and Alcatraz, 6-10. Your faithful zine mobile will be parked outside front with open library/zine-making hours. Inside the cafe: zines all over the walls!!!  live music!!!  zine-making station!

The show will be up all month long but tonight will be extra fun –

West Coast Port Shutdown

tomorrow, 12/12, in support of the west coast port shutdown, the zine mobile will serve as a branch of the Occupy/Decolonize Oakland Library. there’s also gonna be a BOOKS ON BIKES BRIGADE!

Oakland + kids + zines!!

Yesterday was the zine mobile’s first youth-centered event — I parked outside the downtown Oakland Public Library and opened the zine mobile for reading room/library hours… inside we set up a table for zine-making. I brought two typewriters and the library had lots of awesome stamps and kids’ books bound for the recycling bin for clip art.

I feel I should confess that I was really nervous; the age group I tend to feel most comfortable around is at the other end of the age spectrum! But after some reassurance from lovely librarian Amy Martin (who set the whole thing up; thank you Amy!!!!!) and spending a few minutes with the kiddos, my anxiety vanished and I didn’t want the day to end, it was so fun and inspiring…

One little guy was so excited about the typewriter and asked if he could work on his novel and movie script!!

And thanks to dear friend and OPL teen librarian Amy Sonnie for bringing OPL’s teen zine collection for the afternoon!

long live beige!

Old friends of the zine mobile may remember that one of the features in its original collection was the “Beige Is Not Boring” section.  It was suggested by a friend who helped me organize the inside of the van, and referred jokingly to my frequent protestations when she chose neutrals (she’s a designer) that “beige is so boring!”

I dismantled the section when we ended our Orderly Disorder Tour, in an effort to start organizing things by actual content instead of size/color, but I thought it would be fun to give a list here of the zines that were in that section — cuz they do indeed prove that Beige is NOT Boring! (All of these zines are still in the collection, sorted into more helpful categories!)

open library hours/zine-making at Oakland Public Library tomorrow!

From 2-5 tomorrow (Tuesday), the zine mobile will be parked on Oak Street behind the downtown Oakland library with open library/reading room hours — AND!! Inside in the Kids’ Section a station will bet up for zine-making. Supplies (paper, pens, typewriters, etc.) will be provided but feel free to bring your own as well!

Though this activity is especially for the wee(er) ones, ALL are invited and welcome : )

Yesterday’s event at Issues Magazine Shop (the cutest magazine shop in the world!) was amazing!!! Thanks so much to Kiyomi, Noella, and Joe at Issues for hosting it; to DJ Irwin for great music; to Ashley and Carolynn at Fat Bottom Bakery for the incredible cupcakes and cookies; and to everyone for coming out to celebrate zines and print culture!! Zines were donated to the collection (thank you, everyone!!), zines were checked out, and new zines were made at the mini zine making station : ) Midway thru the day, a rainbow appeared across the sky behind Issues.  Aw.

And… if you missed it, it’s not too late to make a mini zine — they’re gonna leave up the zine-making station with typewriter, supplies, and instructions… so get thee to ISSUES and make a zine in time for the East Bay Zine Fest next Sunday!!
